SENSI Wines

PrintHistory and Philosophy

The Sensi family has been making wine in Tuscany since 1890. By 1916 the second generation Fratelli Sensi were distributing Chianti to Florence and the surrounding towns, but it was significant vineyard purchases in 1974 that enabled production to increase sufficiently to distribute all across Italy.  In 1987 the fourth generation Massimo, Marco and Roberta took control of the company. They began the modern export business and made three particularly important decisions. Firstly, in 1995 they purchased the fifteenth century Villa Calappiano property and vineyards, located close to the town of Vinci, the birthplace of Leonardo. The powerful Medici family, the royal house of Florence who initially granted the exclusive use of ‘Chianti’ to this wine region, once owned this historic estate.

it is in this beautiful setting that Sensi now produce their Chianti. Secondly, since 1998 the world-renowned oenologist Lorenzo Landi has controlled wine production for Sensi, bringing a wonderful balance between seriously crafted fine wine and drinkability. Thirdly, Sensi has invested in building a modern BRC certified bottling facility in nearby Lamporecchio. Using their network of strategic estate partners across the country, Sensi is now able to offer a wider range of Italian wines for export under the Sensi Collezione label, as well as exclusive and private labels.

Sensi are one of the largest producers of Chianti, exporting over 70% of their production to overseas markets, and are listed in the Gambero Rosso, Italy’s most influential wine guide.
